AVG Reports “WinPatrol 2012” as a virus

If you’re a AVG customer you may see the following screen when installing WinPatrol 2012.   Fear not.  This is what we commonly call a “false positive”.  I have contacted our friends at AVG and await their response. Most companies will fix this kind of error quickly.

WinPatrol will run along with AVG but this screen incorrectly identifies one of our programs as a virus.  I can assure you WinPatrolEx.exe is not a virus. To verify our safety I tested our program against other Anti-Virus programs using a great service called VirusTotal.com.  Ironically, we found one other little known security program also mistaking WinPatrol as a trojan but the other 41 respectable programs acknowledge that WinPatrol is safe.

It appears a large group of users run both WinPatrol and AVG so hopefully we’ll hear back soon from AVG and they’ll offer a solution.

Instructions from AVG

In the case where AVG Free detects a file on your PC as infected, moves it to the AVG Virus Vault, and you are sure that this file is correct and clean, it is possible that the detected file is a false alarm. If so, we shall prepare the correction as soon as possible. Unfortunately, false alarms do appear from time to time in every Anti-Virus software.

To solve the problem, please send us this file for analysis directly from the AVG Free program this way:

Open AVG Free User Interface.

Choose the "Virus Vault" option from the "History" menu.

Right-click the false positive file and select the "Send to analysis" option from context menu.

Fill in your e-mail address
Confirm the dialog

This file will be sent to our virus specialists for analysis and we will inform you about the result.

I actually use the paid AVG Internet Security 2012 not the free version. It appears that AVG has fixed the problem in the latest virus database update. I only know this because I no longer get this error and everything is running normally again.

I have the following versions from AVG:
Virus Database: 2109/4712
release date: Friday, December 30, 2011, 2:34 AM.
